NCWC “COMFORT WINE” TASTING 11/24/12
PINE RIDGE CHENIN BLANC-VIOGNIER 2011
As comfortable and refreshing as a cool breeze on a warm summer day, “this distinctive blend opens with a dazzling spectrum of fruit and floral aromas, from crisp white peach, honeyed pear and sweet mango, to touches of fresh jasmine blossom and white chai tea. Filled with bright and juicy fruits, the palate flaunts flavors of succulent white nectarine, candied pineapple, green fig and subtle grapefruit. The crisp and slightly off-dry flavor profile lasts well through the clean and refreshing finish.” $10.97
HANDCRAFT PINOT NOIR 2010
This wine is as relaxed and unpretentious as a get-together with good friends. “Gorgeous cherry, vanilla and strawberry aromas are followed by ripe black cherry, sweet spice, vanilla and chocolate flavors. This medium-bodied wine is elegant, supple, smooth and balanced – delicious by itself or perfect with food. The finish is soft and lingering with a perfect integration of structure, fruit and spice.” 87 points Wine Enthusiast. $9.97
CHELSEA GOLDSCHMIDT MERLOT 2010
Winemaker Nick Goldschmidt (Chelsea is his daughter) makes this as a Cabernet-style Merlot, one that is full and ripe, but with the depth and complexity that comes from great vineyards and meticulous winemaking. Appealing for its young, zesty aromas and flavors of black cherry and herbs, this wine fits as well as a warm sweatshirt on a cool night. 88 points Wine Spectator. $13.97
BENMARCO MALBEC 2010
Speaking of cold nights, how about a nice fire and a glass of this? “Lovely aromas of black cherry, spice box, tobacco, lavender, and earthy minerals inform the nose of a ripe, succulent, intensely flavored wine that offers outstanding value and is meant for drinking over the next 5-7 years.” 90 points Wine Advocate. $17.97
WATERSTONE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2009
It always feels so good to find a great deal. Consider that 80% of the fruit in this wine comes from Harlan Estate, whose 2009 sells for $900… a bottle! “This is amazing value in California Cab. It’s hard to believe. Aromas of fresh herbs with currants and blueberries as well as mint. It’s full bodied with velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Lots of fruit but not overdone and not over alcoholic. Drink and don’t worry.” 93 points James Suckling. $19.97
MOLLYDOOKER “THE BOXER” SHIRAZ 2011
How can you not love Mollydooker? The name itself (the Aussie term for left hander) is fun, and so is the wine. This boxer packs a heck of a punch, with powerful blackberry and plum fruit accented by hints of chocolate. As big, lush, and delicious as berry pie a la mode. $22.97
