NCWC “ROCKIN’ REDS” TASTING EVENT, 3/7/14
MOUNTAIN DOOR MALBEC 2011
This Argentinian Malbec offers generous flavors that are ripe and polished, with a plush core of plum, blackberry, raspberry, morello cherries, violets and mocha. It’s a wine made for grilled meats, salmon, pasta and, of course, empanadas. $9.97
THE WOLFTRAP 2013
Named after an old wolf trap that was discovered when this South African farm, called Boekenhoutskloof, was founded, this is a blend of Syrah, Mourvedre and Viognier. Black fruits, violets, and oak notes lead to a smooth, savory palate with a peppery finish. Soft tannins and lingering flavors make for easy drinking, indeed. $9.97
TROUBLEMAKER BLEND 7
From California’s Central Coast, this is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Zinfandel. Designed to be both complex and accessible, it delivers rich aromatics of bright red fruit with hints of smoke and violets, following through on the palate with nice depth and cruising through a long finish. $15.97
LONE WOLF FEARLESS
Think of this as a Paso Robles “field blend.” The Lone Wolf Red Table Wine blends eight varietals for lots of upfront cherry and tart cranberry fruit and a deep vein of minerality that runs through the middle. Spice and chocolate-covered cherries bring the diverse aromas and flavors of this fun wine together. $12.97
GREY WOLF CELLARS ZINFUL CAB 2011
The winery states this wine was “born out of desperation.” After tasting it we felt it was more like inspiration. 60% Zinfandel and 40% Cabernet, it layers aromas and flavors of blackberries and blueberries plus oak nuances, with enough tannins to provide structure through the lengthy, drying finish. Good depth and concentration. $16.97
AMBERHILL SECRET BLEND 2012
The secret is out! This is a mix of Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet, Malbec and Pinot Noir. Ready to be enjoyed immediately, it offers enticing aromas of ripe red strawberries and cherries and notes of rhubarb and mocha that open to delightful hints of plums and blueberries. On the palate jammy red raspberries and strawberries lead to a silky and soft finish of lingering candied fruits. $7.97
HANDCRAFT PETITE SIRAH 2012
One taste and you’ll see this is all about jammy fruit from beginning to end. It starts with aromas of cherry, plum and cocoa followed by flavors of blueberry, coffee and spice. This full-bodied wine has a bold tannin structure and balanced acidity that lead to a long finish. This big wine is anything but “petite.” $10.97
