WINE OF THE WEEK:
The Cucamonga Valley, east of L.A., once was
home to a vast number of grapevines. But the
suburban sprawl that accompanied the name
change to Rancho Cucamonga wiped out the
vast majority of them.
Fortunately, one parcel remains. The Lopez
Vineyard, planted in 1918, produces a small
amount of Zinfandel of such high quality that
winemakers devoted to that grape fight to
get their hands on it.
One such is Carol Shelton, whose “Monga”
Zinfandel has been a huge hit here.
Another is Kim Wascher of Flight Vineyards.
Kim acquired enough Lopez Vineyard fruit
to make her Barrel Roll Zin, and we have
the 2010 vintage for just $9.97/bottle.
Give it a few minutes exposure to air,
and it will open up to reveal aromas of
bright red fruit, oak, and pepper.
The flavors very much echo the nose,
with additional notes of vanilla and
a nice hit of chocolate toward the finish.
A nice streak of acidity keeps the
impression bright from entry to finish,
also making this a fun food wine.
Enjoy with everything from barbecue
to cheeseburgers to pizza!
(We have a very limited amount of this,
so it won’t be around for long, fyi.)
