It is our great privilege this month of August to
present you with a new batch of tasty wines.
Before we discuss them, however, here is some
key information:
Your Pick-up Party, which is your opportunity to
taste all 4 Club wines for free, falls on Tuesday,
August 9th, from 4-9.
Your 3rd Quarter Stock Up Days (10% off everything
in the shop) fall on the first weekend of September,
the 3rd and 4th.
The monthly BOTTLE WINNER is Leif Erikson. Congrats!
Now we’ll talk about the Silver wines. First up is the 2014
Monga Zinfandel from our friend Carol Shelton. These are
her notes:
“Deep black cherry fruit, dried cranberry, orange zest,
berry patch in the sun! Dusty vanilla-caramel oak,
graham crackers, spice and cocoa. Mouthfeel is creamy
yet tangy, with firm tannins and a long, lush finish.”
Silver #2 is the 2013 Kuleto “Frog Prince” from Napa
Valley, whose blend is 53% Merlot, 24% Cabernet,
15% Cabernet Franc, 6% Malbec, 2% Petite Verdot.
If there isn’t such a thing as red cherry perfume, then
there is now, as this wine exudes the smell of a cherry
orchard. A bit of black licorice root grounds the wine in
something sweet and earthy, as the wine arcs beautifully
across the palate.
Now for the Gold level. First is the 2012 Hedges Cuvee
Marcel Dupont from Red Mountain, all Syrah.
If you ever wanted an explanation of Washington wine,
this is a classic example, with one foot planted in the
New World, and one in the Old. It shows ripe blackcurrant
and black cherry fruit with dashes of vanilla and spice,
accented by an integrated savory quality and notes of
toast, grilled herbs, and charcoal. It offers great complexity
of flavor and solid structure, with a lingering finish that
shows off that complexity.
Finally, the 2011 Calyptra Assemblage from Chile’s
Cachapoal Valley. This delicious red is 50% Syrah,
40% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet; it garnered a 92 point
score from the Wine Advocate.
Rich aromas and flavors include blackcurrant, blackberry,
blueberry, and vanilla, with oak accents and some dusty
earth and smoke. Another wine with terrific complexity!
That’s the story for August, and we’re sticking to it.
Have a great month!
