March is here, which means Daylight Savings Time and spring are right around the corner! We’ve got 4 great Club Wines to help you celebrate the longer days.
First, though, a few details. Your Pick-up Party, which is your opportunity to taste all 4 Club wines for FREE, falls on Tuesday the 3rd, any time from 5-9.
The monthly BOTTLE WINNER is Megan Yeager. Congratulations!
Your Stock-up Days, when you may buy wine at a discount, are Saturday and Sunday, March 14th and 15th. Take advantage!
Okay, let’s get to the wines, Silver Level first:
Both wines are from Paso Robles. The 2017 Vina Robles Cabernet delivers loads of Paso richness at a fair price, starting with lush aromas of black cherry, caramel and mocha cream. The palate starts soft and inviting, with more cherry and caramel, then firms up with tighter tannins and penetrating acidity.
The 2012 Lone Madrone Calon is a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Sangiovese, Counoise and Syrah. It is a fun, fruit-forward wine, with layers of cherry and raspberry fruit accented by spice and a subtle floral note.
Now for the Gold Level wines. Check these out:
First up, the 2015 Thacher Original Copy, from Paso’s Adelaida District. This blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Cabernet Franc is done in a more savory style, with aromas of black pepper, dried olive, toasty oak, boysenberry and a slightly rising floral kick. The black plum and blackberry flavors are framed by more toasty wood on the palate and lifted by pepper spice and dusty earth.
Finally, we close with something that has never happened before in the 9-plus years we have had this club… a repeat! Sure, we’ve offered new vintages of wines. But we’ve never repeated a Club Wine until now. It’s the 2014 Smokescreen Cabernet from Fiftyrow. It was a Gold pick several months ago, and here’s why we chose it again.
A few weeks ago I had occasion to share a bottle of this wine with friends, and we were all floored by its quality and deliciousness. (of course, we had it with Cardiff Crack, and that didn’t hurt) 92% Cab with a bit of Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah, this Napa wine shows blackberry and red fruits, cassis, mocha, graphite, and sweet oak spices. The structured “Rutherford dust” tannins give this wine its dense texture and expansive mouthfeel, while balanced acidity from the excellent growing season adds vibrancy. Simply put, it’s killer. And since the winery had a little bit left, we grabbed it for you!
We’re big fans of these wines and think you will be too. Thank you, and cheers!!
