NCWC BUBBLY TASTING, 12/19/12
LaMARCA PROSECCO
We’ll be bouncing all over the world during this tasting, starting with Italy. This is “a delicate, well-balanced Prosecco, showing a good blend of baked apple, tart lemon and grapefruit, with a lightly creamy mineral texture on the palate. Medium froth, with some body and a pleasant lemon and mineral finish.” 90 points Wine Spectator. $13.97
JEAN PHILIPPE BRUT BLANQUETTE DE LIMOUX
Now to France, specifically Limoux in the Languedoc region of the south. Bottlings of this Bubbly blend date back to 1530, and the Cuvee Jean Philippe is among the finest modern renditions. It’s a blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Mauzac and is delightfully crisp and clean, showcasing refreshing notes of green apple and lemon. 87 points Tobin Bros. $12.97
GRUET BRUT SPARKLING
Suddenly we find ourselves in New Mexico! Yes, New Mexico. Meet the Bubbly that woke people up to the potential of this Southwestern state. This Brut is crisp yet full-bodied, with a rich complexity and fine mousse. It is “focused and richly styled, with spicy tropical fruit aromas and appealing baked apple, cinnamon and herb notes.” 89 points Wine Spectator. $16.97
J VINEYARDS CUVEE 20
To the Russian River Valley we go for a taste of this delicious sparkler, a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. “This year’s bottling is richer than last year’s, and offers broad citrus, raspberry, vanilla and yeasty brioche flavors. The wine feels clean, vibrant and smooth.” 90 points Wine Enthusiast. $19.97
ROEDERER ESTATE BRUT ROSE
Finally, we hop up to Anderson Valley to experience this terrific domestic Brut Rose. “From the yeasty, strawberry-tinged aroma to the brisk, doughy mouthfeel through to the honeyed, complex finish, this is a fine wine. It feels beautiful, clean and stimulating, just as a sparkling wine should. Editor’s Choice.” 92 points Wine Enthusiast. $25.97
