NCWC REPENT YOUR ZINS TASTING, 10/21/11
HARASZTHY AMADOR ZINFANDEL 2009
We begin our Zin-fully Zin-sational tasting of 7 Deadly Zins with this example from the family that helped pioneer the California wine industry back in 1857. Forgive them their PRIDE in Agoston Haraszthy’s legendary accomplishments as you enjoy these flavors of spicy raspberry, vanilla and nutmeg. $11.97.
MURPHY-GOODE LIAR’S DICE SONOMA ZINFANDEL 2007
Please don’t ENVY this wine its sweet, juicy fruit and rich flavors of black cherry and blackberry jam, along with soft tannins and acidity that balance all that tasty fruit. Just dig it! After all, others may have a bigger house, fancier car, and more ducats in the bank, but with this in your glass they may envy you. $15.97
GIRARD NAPA OLD VINE ZINFANDEL 2009
GLUTTONY is the inordinate desire to consume more than one requires. Don’t worry, though. We’ll forgive your gluttonous impulses when it comes to this wine. It’s a lush, fruit-forward, medium-bodied lip smacker with well-integrated tannins and balanced acidity. Flavors of cherry, blackberry, pipe tobacco, cinnamon and allspice will have you reaching for a second glass, and maybe a third. 88 points Tobin Bros. $15.97.
FOUR VINES MAVERICK AMADOR ZINFANDEL 2007
One sip, and you could very well develop a serious LUST for this Zin from Amador County. Wine and the pleasures of the flesh do go hand in hand, so why not just go with it? This is “gutsy, offering a real sense of place, with loamy blackberry aromas and briary blueberry, tar and licorice flavors that finish with minerally tannins.” 89 points Wine Enthusiast. $19.97.
FRANK FAMILY NAPA ZINFANDEL 2009
Next time someone or something pisses you off, don’t fall victim to WRATH. Stave it off with a glass of this, which can only help put things in perspective and help you see all the beauty in the world. Aromas of raspberries, plums, leather, brown sugar and white pepper will relax you. Then flavors of sweet plum, caramel, and spice will mellow you right out. $29.97.
SEGHESIO SONOMA ZINFANDEL 2009
Seghesio is another grand old California Zinfandel house, going back to 1895 and now on the 4th generation. “Bold aromas of briary wild berry and cracked pepper lead to plush, layered flavors of black raspberry, toasty sage and espresso that finish with zesty tannins.” This wine may tempt you to the point of GREED, but there’s no need to be covetous; there’s enough to go around (we hope). 90 points Wine Spectator. $21.97.
MOSS ROXX ANCIENT VINE LODI ZINFANDEL 2006
Their motto is “This is not your everyday wine.” Duh. From 50-100 year old vines, this is super ripe, with mature, round tannins accenting raspberry, chocolate, mocha and spice flavors. We fully understand if this Zin-fully generous tasting may have you feeling a little SLOTH. That’s okay. Just wake up in time for our tasting next Wednesday and our Costume Contest next Friday! $19.97.
