NCWC NEW WINE TASTING 3/8/13
ORFILA ARROYO GRANDE CHARDONNAY 2011
While the winery is local, the fruit was sourced from Laetitia in Arroyo Grande. Deliciously balanced, “it has aromatics reminiscent of warm tropical fruits with an abundance of fresh pineapple and juicy pear on the palate. This light, summery Chardonnay presents a touch of oak and a grapefruit-like acidity on the finish.” 89 points Bill Tobin. $14.97
CHATEAU LETTAU GRENACHE 2011
This Paso Robles winery calls their Grenache cheerful and lighthearted, like a golden retriever chasing a ball or a cute kid on a swing. Very true. The nose reveals an intriguing earthy note alongside ripe cherries. On the palate smooth tannins exert a subtle grip that sneaks up on you, while strawberry, raspberry and red currant flavors are accented by a Pinot-like earthy element. 88 points Tobins. $15.97
LAPIS LUNA ROMANZO MOON ZINFANDEL 2011
This tasty Zinfandel hails from the Shoup Vineyard in Lodi, and it has 15% Sangiovese added. The winemakers named it “Romanzo Moon” in honor of all those who bring romance and joy into our lives, and this wine is meant to be shared with them! Rich aromas of raspberry and blueberry segue into flavors; crisp acidity and significant tannins hold the fruit together into a nice, yummy package. 87 points Tobin Bros. $9.97
FINCA DECERO MALBEC 2010
This is a warm and generous Malbec, with a subtle savory note accenting deep aromas of red and blue fruit. “It’s full, grabby and correct in the mouth, with lightly herbal flavors of plum, berry and chocolate. The finish is big, juicy and toasty.” 90 points Wine Enthusiast. $16.97
ZACA MESA SYRAH 2009
Zaca Mesa was the first winery to plant Syrah in Santa Barbara County in 1978, and they’ve been rocking this varietal ever since. The 2009 vintage “displays rich blackberry, cassis, espresso, mocha and signature sage spice aromas and flavors. The silky finish lingers from the ripe tannins and smoky oak. This full-bodied wine should be enjoyed over the next ten years.” $19.97
EMILIO MORO RIBERA DEL DUERO 2009
This Spanish Tempranillo is the brand new vintage of a wine we’ve carried for years, and its quality has not dropped off one bit. “Seductive aromas of blackberry and blueberry preserves, cherry-cola and rose, with a sexy incense note and a touch of allspice. Stains the palate with dark berry compote and spicecake flavors, with zesty minerality adding cut. Blends depth and vivacity smoothly, finishing with impressive clarity, a kiss of vanillin oak and lingering sweetness.” 91 points Stephen Tanzer. $23.97
JONATA TODOS 2009
This small Santa Ynez winery absolutely kicks butt. Their Todos (Spanish for everything) is aptly named, composed as it is from Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, and a dash of Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc. “It is strikingly beautiful, showing marvelous intensity and great depth from start to finish. Layers of dark red and black fruit and flowers flow effortlessly from this flashy, totally dazzling wine.” 93 points Wine Advocate. $44.97
