WINE OF THE WEEK:

One of the great joys of this gig is discovering wines that over-deliver, then introducing them to our friends.

What do we mean by over-deliver? A wine that tastes like it should cost more than it does.

We have just such a bottle for you this week, the 2016 Compass Cabernet. If you’re a regular reader you may recall past mentions of other wines from this producer, and for good reason. These guys create knock-out values year in and year out.

For their Cab they source fruit from among the finest coastal growing regions in California, known for long sunny days and cool nights, which makes for optimal ripening with balancing acidity. This vintage gives you everything you want in a good Cabernet. Dark fruit, integrated oak influence including vanilla and a bit of spice, and proper structure from entry to finish.

At just 9.97/bottle this certainly is a deal. You’ll see what we mean when you taste it!

WINE BAR EXCITEMENT!

This is the part where we tempt you with outrageously good wine bar specials.

First, let’s talk about this Wednesday, 5/16. We’ll be offering a “Somm’s Choice”
special. One of our Somms (Jim, actually) will be here Wednesday evening
and will pick an excellent wine to pour at drastically reduced by-the-glass pricing.

The wine this time around is the 2015 Caymus Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.
We’re coming to the end of the vintage on this perennial favorite, which makes
this an opportune time to see how it’s evolving.

To make it very easy for you to do exactly that, we’ll have this delicious Napa Cab,
which we sell for 79.97/bottle, at just $10/half glass. The best glass price you’ll
ever find for this wine… by about a million miles. The deal is available any time
from 4-9 this Wednesday, so come on over!

(the Caymus, btw, received a very flattering 94+ point score from the Wine
Advocate, which used words like “perfumed,” “full-bodied,” and “velvety.”)

THEN… there’s our weekend Top Flight. The focus this weekend will be on
new arrivals that have scored 92 points or better. This flight absolutely rocks,
and we will give you more details in a couple days. Just make sure you set
some time aside either Friday or Saturday!
