Our monthly WINNER is Keith Leal.
Keith, feel free to select any past or
present Silver level wine.
Now for the wines, starting with the Silvers.
The 2012 Niner Red, from Paso Robles, is a
blend of 39% Cabernet Franc, 27% Merlot,
18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Syrah,
4% Carmenere, and 4% Grenache.
“On the nose raspberry and pomegranate notes
are accented by vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and
candied orange zest. The richness of the fruit
follows through on the palate, highlighted by hints
of earth and sawdust. Mocha inspired tannins
and bright acid provide good structure for a
persistent finish.”
The second silver is the 2012 Terra Divina
Malbec from Argentina’s Uco Valley.
Dark purple in the glass, it offers dark fruit
and cedar on the nose. On the palate it
gushes flavor, with a river of dark fruit plus
integrated oak and notes of earth, coffee,
and subtle savory elements. Big, grippy
tannins hold everything together through
the long finish. This has power and presence.
As for the Gold level, the 2005 Montagna Cabernet
is a treat from Napa Valley, a library release from
this winery that we were thrilled to discover:
“90% Cab, 8% Malbec, 2% Syrah. Richly aromatic
nose, cassis, blackberry, boysenberry, vanilla.
Big and grippy with lots of fruit, structure and depth.
Loads of dark fruit up front, gradually making way
for secondary notes of coffee, tobacco leaf, vanilla,
and subtle herbs. Long drying finish. Undeniably
young, and cellar worthy. Impressive.”
Last but not least is the 2011 Ahnfeldt Cabernet,
from the Monticello Vineyard, also of Napa, and
consulting winemaker Paul Hobbs.
With just a dash each of Merlot, Cab Franc, and
Petit Verdot, it shows rich, ripe dark fruit,
balanced with oak-derived accents. Smooth
tannins provide structure to hold everything
together beautifully through the long finish.
Thank you for the honor and privilege of choosing
wines for you. We would love to have you taste
them at the Pick-up Party, which again is
WEDNESDAY, 12/3.
We hope you have a fantastic month
and Christmas holiday!
